ANGOULEME 16th–17th–18th SEPTEMBER 2016 Advance Notification
Once again JEC SOF/A plans to attend this fabulous weekend of watching historic racing around the ramparts/streets of the old town. Whether you love sitting in cafes listening to the roaring engines, watching the racing, looking at the many club vehicle displays, going on one of the rallies, wandering through the paddock etc., you’re bound to have a good time here. Angouleme boasts the oldest (1939) unchanged ramparts circuit in France. Once again rumour abounds that for financial reasons, this may be the last year the race is held.
This year a hotel in the city centre has agreed to hold 10 double rooms for us. This means we will not have to travel back to an out of town hotel each night. They have also agreed to reserve their 9 private parking spaces on the ground floor for us, otherwise there is an underground car park almost opposite the hotel. Beware trying to enter and park inside the underground car park on the Sunday morning as it fills up quickly, best to park the night before. Hotel rooms will be available on a first come first served basis, they do not even ask for a credit card number to book a room and will accept cancellations with no charge. The hotel is only about 150 meters from our usual Jaguar exhibition parking. So, if you stay here there will be no need for the early start to meet up out of town with our guide Claude, in order for him to lead us to the parking area, as in previous years.
If you want to watch the racing you will need to book a grandstand seat (35 – 49 euros including paddock pass) as soon as possible as they do sell out, go to www.circuit-des-remparts.com/ for this and lots more information. You can see very little of the racing without a grandstand seat due to the erected partitions. The official programme so far is shown below and is followed by an outline of our JEC SOF/A plans.
FRIDAY 16th to SUNDAY 18th: Car exhibitions around the square and town hall.
FRIDAY 16th : Concours d’Elégance en Automobile – 8.45pm Place du Champ de Mars Esplanade.
SATURDAY 17th : Rallye International de Charente (200 vintage and classic cars from 1910)
Start Chais Magelis 08.00-10.00, Finish Esplanade du Champ de Mars 16.45-18.00. Entrance fee 350€?
Clubs Rally (we are allowed just 12 cars), similar hours, application through our club. Entrance fee 85€? Further info to follow.
Last year a group of us chose not to enter the rally but park by the road side, set up tables and chairs, open champagne, enjoy a stunning feast and watch the cars go past. The rally route is well publicized the day before so finding an ideal spot was not difficult. Many of the participants even pulled over to enjoy a glass with us.
SATURDAY 17th: 19h30 – JEC SOF/A dinner together with wine, cost (target 25€) and venue in town – pay on the night. Details to follow. As there are only a couple of places in the town that can sit 30+ people at the same time we may prefer to use 2+ separate locations and break into smaller groups as was done last year.
SUNDAY 18th: Exhibition parking for Clubs all around the town. Race practice from 08.00 to 13.00, lunch break with car parades from 13.00 to 14.00 and racing from 14.00 to 19.15. They are 30 minute races in groups that include vintage, pre war sport cars, single seaters, GT cars, Bugattis etc.
SUNDAY 18th: JEC SOF/A free club parking/exhibition at the usual venue in town, details to follow. We seem to be able to park up without doing the mandatory clubs rally the day before, with Claude’s help in confusing the marshals.
SUNDAY 18th: Simple JEC SOF/A two course lunch in Angouléme town (target 19€) with wine – pay on the day. Details to be follow. Again as there are only a couple of places in the town that sit 30+ people at the same time we may prefer to use 2+ separate locations and break into smaller groups.
